Ghizo Island is in the Solomon's Western Province. The island's main town is Gizo, which is the second largest settlement in the Solomon Islands.
One of the most interesting places on Ghizo is the secluded traditional village of Nusambaruku, which features several houses that are built on stilts. You can get there from Gizo on foot, but it is far more interesting to go there by canoe. Upon arrival you should ask the villagers for permission and tell them that you just want to look around, in order not to offend them. Nusambaruku is only 1 km (0.6 miles) west of Gizo.
A little further west is the Malaita fishing village, named so, because it is mainly inhabited by Malaitan settlers. The fishing village is totally different from Nusambaruku and it is surprising to see two such different cultural communities operating only several minutes walking from each other.
Most accommodation on Ghizo Island is available in the main town of Gizo. The island is about 370 km (230 miles) northwest from Honiara. Flights connect the two.
