Gippsland is a fertile undulating region, east of Melbourne. The towns along the Latrobe Valley are off little interest to travelers, as that region forms Victoria's industrial heartland. The rest of Gippsland is very scenic and boasts forests, including pockets of rainforest, mountain ranges, dairy farms and a beautiful coastline.
The Grand Ridge Road is a narrow country lane that runs along the ridge of the Strzelecki Ranges. It is one of the most spectacular roads in the region. In the western part of Gippsland is the gourmet trail, where you'll find numerous fruit and berry orchards, cheese factories and trout farms. Walhalla in the north is the region's most interesting former gold-mining town. The Snowy River, Croajingolong, Errinundra and Coopracambra national parks in the Wilderness Coast area of eastern Gippsland are four of Victoria's most spectacular and remote national parks. Large parts of that region have never been cleared for agriculture. There are temperate rainforests and alpine gorges, as well as numerous un-spoilt beaches and inlets. There are possibilities for bush walking, canoeing and river-rafting. The gateway to the four parks is the town of Orbost. In the middle of Croajingolong is the fishing resort of Mallacoota.
Accommodation is available in many towns across Gippsland.
