Golden Gate

Golden Gate

The Golden Gate is a 6.4 km (4 miles) long and 1.6 to 3.2 km (1 - 2 miles) wide strait that links San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean. The English explorer Sir Francis Drake discovered the Golden Gate in 1579. Its name dates from before the California gold rush, but it became popular during that period because of its mineral connotation.

The Golden Gate is the drowned mouth of the united Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers and forms an excellent 120 m (400 feet) deep channel into San Francisco Bay. The strait is adorned by San Francisco's famous Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate is 110 km southwest from Sacramento and 3900 km west from Washington D.C.
