Gombe Stream National Park is a small chimpanzee sanctuary. The park covers 52 km² of lush forest between Lake Tanganyika and an escarpment inland, north of Kigoma, not far from the border with Burundi.
In the park is the chimp research station that was set up by Jane Goodall in 1960. Some of the chimpanzees come down to the research station every day and they are very interesting animals. The park headquarters is at Kasekela on the lakeshore. Whenever you want to walk through the park, yuo'll need a guide.
Supplies are available from the market at Mwamgongo in the north of the park. Accommodation is at the park headquarters. The only way to get to the Gombe Stream is by boat. Lake taxis serve all the lakeshore towns between Kigami and the Burundi border.
