Hamilton is the capital and commercial center of Bermuda and the locals refer to it as 'town'. If someone on Bermuda says he's going to town, he means he's going to Hamilton. The town is quite small, but there is always a lot of activity going on, at least if you compare it with the rest of Bermuda.
Hamilton's harbor front is the most lively part of town, especially on and around Front Street there's always a lot happening. Fromt Street is lined with numerous 19th-century Victorian buildings that are painted in bright pastel lemon, lime, apricot and sky blue. Many buildings have overhanging verandahs that provide good views over the harbor.
Hilltop Fort Hamilton provides another good view of the harbor. It was built in the mid-19th century during a time of rising tensions between Britain and the U.S. On its ramparts you can see 10-inch rifled muzzleloader guns that were capable of firing 400-pound cannonballs through vessels with iron hulls. The weapons were never used.'.'There are several interesting sights in Hamilton, including the neo-Gothic Bermuda Cathedral, which is one of the city's major landmarks. The Bermuda Historical Society Museum contains models of the ill-fated Sea Venture, while at the Bermuda National Gallery, one can see works of Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and Winslow Homer.
There are numerous hotels, restaurants, cafés and pubs in Hamilton and it also has Bermuda's best selection of shops. Hamilton is Bermuda's transportation hub, so, even if you don't stay there, you'll probably end op there frequently, when traveling around the island, using the public bus system.
