Herat

Herat

It is thought that Alexander the Great founded Herat in the 4th century BC. Herat's center is dominated by the Masjid-i-Jami (Friday mosque, or Great Mosque), which dates from the 12th century. The striking blue and white mosque is framed by four blue minarets, which are beautifully decorated.

Other sights in the city include the old city walls, gates and several tombs. The city's major economic activity consists of the trading of grain, fruit, vegetables, and sheep from the surrounding area. Some goods are exported to Turkmenistan via the Harirud River.

Accommodation is available in Herat, which is the capital of Afghanistan's Herat Province. The city is 640 km west of Kabul.
