Honiara

Honiara

The capital of the Solomon Islands is on the northern coast of the island of Guadalcanal. It is a dusty town, which boasts some interesting sights.

Honiara's local travel hub is Point Cruz, which is reputedly the place, where Spanish explorer Mendaña raised a cross. Nowadays it is one of Honiara's more lively areas, with passenger ferries loading and unloading passengers and copra boats bringing in their load. Other sights in the capital include the Parliament, the National Museum and Cultural Center, the Botanical Gardens and Chinatown, which is probably the most vibrant part of Honiara. Not far from the capital is the so-called Water Pump Village.

Diving tours, cruises and excursions to sites that were important during WWII, are available in the capital. Honiara has many nice cafés, restaurants and bars, as well as various hotels. There are also numerous handicraft shops in case you want to bring an original souvenir.
