Hubei is one of China's most important industrial provinces. A large navigable stretch of the Yangzi River runs through the province. In the south of Hubei, close to the towns of Sandouping and Maoping is the Three Gorges Dam, one of the world's largest. It is 2 km wide and 185 m high and was built to control the Yangzi River's annual floods, as well as for electricity production.
Other interesting sights in Hubei include the Wudangshan mountains, a mountain range in the northwest of the province that stretches for some 400 km and is sacred to Taoists. Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province. The Shennongjia district in northwestern Hubei has the province's wildest scenery.
