Ilobasco means 'place of many corn fields' in the local Nahua language, but nowadays Ilobasco is known better for its ceramics rather than its corn. The so-called sorpresas (surprises) consists of tiny ceramic scenes and figures, encapsulated in egg-shaped shells, the size of a walnut, are one of Ilobasco's major sources of economic funds. Originally the sorpresas depicted scenes of events in daily life, but later naked figures were included as well. The local priest tried to stop these sinful sorpresas, but they still sell, albeit tightly wrapped in paper. There are numerous artesanía shops, where sorpresas are sold, along Ilobasco's main drag.
