Jerome is an old mining town that had some 15,000 inhabitants in the 1920's. Unfortunately, the 1929 stock market crash shut down many of the mines. The last one closed in 1953 and Jerome was to become abandoned another ghost town. In the late 1960's, however, Jerome's spectacular location and empty houses were discovered by hippies, artists and retirees and the town slowly revived. Nowadays, Jerome's population stands at around 350 and the town boasts an interesting collection of late-19th and early-20th century buildings. There are many art galleries, souvenir shops, restaurants, saloons and even a few B&B's. The entire town is precariously perched on a steep hillside. Many of the antique shops and art galleries feature high quality pieces and as a result, the shopping is definitely upscale.
Jerome is about 30 km southwest of Sedona on Hwy 89A and 150 km north of Phoenix.
