Kraków has been the Royal Capital for more than 500 years and most of its historic buildings survived WWII unharmed, making it the most interesting Polish city historically and architecturally.
Kraków's Old Town is surrounded by parks and easily explored on foot. It is one of the country's oldest remaining city centers and includes several interesting sights. The Main Market Square is surrounded by historic buildings, including several churches. Some good museums can also be found there. The oldest church in town is the 10th-century St Adalbert's Church. In the Church of the Reformed Franciscans you can see mummified bodies if one of the priests is in the mood to open some of the coffins for you. The best museum in Kraków is probably the Czartoryski Museum, where large amounts of art and handicrafts are on display. Also worth a visit is the Royal palace on the Wawel mountain.
Kraków was the city where Oscar Schindler did his business. He became famous after Steven Spielberg made a film about his life and the Jews he saved from the nazis during WWII. Parts of that film were actually shot in Kraków.
The former concentration camps of Oswiecim (Auschwitz) and Birkenau (nowadays museums) are not far from Kraków. In nearby Wieliczka is a salt mine that includes a church, 130 m under the ground.
There are numerous hotels and restaurants, as well as bars and nightclubs in town. Kraków is 255 km southwest of Warsaw.
