Lambaréné is the tird largest city in Gabon. It is about 150 km southeast of the capital on an island in the middle of the Ogooué River. Most people come to the city to visit the Schweitzer Hospital, about 8 km (5 miles) from town. Albert Schweitzer founded the hospital that is still in use. Part of the hospital has been turned into a museum and there you can visit Albert's office, library and laboratory.
Lambaréné is close to the lake region southwest of the city. Tours to the lakes can be arranged from the city. You can take a pirogue into the lakes to see wildlife such as hippos. Most tours will take you to Lac Evaro and take a full day.
