Lubbock is on a branch of the Brazos River of the Llano Estacado region in northwestern Texas. The area was settled by Quakers in 1879 and it quickly became the trade center for the cotton- and grain-growing Great Plains region of Texas and eastern New Mexico. Manufactures in Lubbock include cottonseed oil, earth-moving and irrigation equipment, as well as pumps. Food and dairy products are also produced and there are wineries. A prairie-dog town is preserved in the nearby Mackenzie State Park. Lubbock Lake Landmark State Historical Park is an archaeological and natural history preserve. Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian College and the Texas Air Museum are in the city.
There are several hotels and restaurants in town. Lubbock is 480 m west of Dallas and 2320 km southwest from Washington D.C.
