The interior of Mahé Island consists of forests and various plantations, where coconut, cinnamon and vanilla are produced. The landscape is mountainous and there are excellent views over the island from its higher areas. The Seychelles' capital of Victoria is in the northeast of Mahé Island. The country's highest peak is 905 meter high Morne Seychellois.
Mahé Island has several good beaches, such as Beau Vallon, which is on North West Bay, some 3 km (2 miles) west of Victoria. Scuba diving can be done there. A bus runs between this beach and the capital. In the southern part of Mahé Island are more good beaches, such as the one opposite Ãle Souris on the east coast. The beaches of Anse Soleil and Anse Petite Police are on the western coast of Mahé, but they are in an isolated part of the island and you really need a 4WD vehicle to get there. These beaches are beautifully situated though, and they are excellent for snorkeling. At Anse Intendance the waves are usually very wild, which makes it unsuitable for swimming, but amazing to watch.
Giant tortoises can be seen on Thérèse Island off Mahé's west coast. Off the eastern coast, near the capital of Victoria is Sainte Anne Marine National Park, which includes six small islands.
There are many hotels and pensions on Mahé Island. Apart from the capital, you can also stay at Belle Ombre, Beau Vallon, Machabée and some other settlements on the island. There are many good restaurants scattered all over the island.
