Mahón (Mao)

Mahón (Mao)

Mahón, or Mao, is the capital of Menorca. Its architecture was heavily influenced by the British. Menorca used to be part of the British Empire and you can still see the remains of the old English Marine Hospital.

Some of the most interesting sights in Mahón include the Port, which is said to be the second best port in the world (behind Pearl Harbor). Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton lived their famous romance in the nearby Finca de San Antonio. Mahón's aquarium is at the port. It is open from 9:30 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00 hours. On Saturdays you can visit from 9:00 to 14:00 and on Sundays it is only open between 11:00 and 13:00. The aquarium also features an interesting exposition of fauna and flora of the Mediterranean area.

The Ateneo Científico y Literario houses an important collection of fossils, historical maps and ceramic articles. It is on Conde de Cienfuentes, 25 and open from 9:00 till 14:00 and 15:00 to 22:00 hours. Other Prehistoric Remains can be seen in Trepucó, in the South of Mahón, as well as in the districts of Torelló and Talatí de Dalt. All of them feature highly interesting and quite well conserved rests of prehistoric cultures.

The Iglesia de Santa María is situated on Plaza de España. It boasts a monumental Baroque organ. Another interesting sight is the Church and Convent of San Francisco. It has a marvelous neo-Romantical portal. On the street of San Felipe is Mahón's Military Museum. The most interesting is a room that is dedicated to Charles III.

There are many hotels and restaurants in Mahón. The town is in the southeast of Menorca, some 690 km southeast of Madrid.
