Makonde Plateau
The Makonde Plateau is in the beautiful southeastern part of Tanzania, close to the border with Mozambique. Although it is the area where the original makonde carvings, so much copied by East African artisans, came from, it is little visited by travelers.
You can get there from Kyela by bus. First travel to the town of Njombe, which lies in one of the highest and coldest areas of Tanzania. Then you can go via Songea and Tunduru to the town of Masasi, which is on the plateau. A ferry from Dar es Salaam runs to the town of Mtwara, which is also on the plateau.
There are hotels and restaurants in many of the towns in the area.
