Maolin is a small village, which is situated in beautiful natural surroundings. There are several hotels in town, but it is also possible to camp out, as most visitors seem to do. The area around Maolin is excellent for hiking and trails and paths run in all directions. Most of the hike will take you over suspension bridges and past beautiful waterfalls.
The aboriginal village of Tona is about 15 km (9 miles) from Maolin and can easily be reached on a two-hour hike. The villagers there sell tables, chair seats and small decorative pieces of stone to tourists. There is a hotel in Tona, as well as some restaurants. Not far from town is Tona Hot Springs, a natural outdoor hot spring.
If you want to explore a larger area around Maolin you will need to get a motorcycle. But if you like long hikes, then Maolin is the right place for you. Maolin has bus connections with Kao-hsiung, Taiwan's second largest city. Maolin is 255 km south of Tai-pei (Taipei).
