Meridian
Meridian was settled in 1831. It is an important rail and highway point and the trade, shipping and industrial center for a farm and timber area. In 1863, during the Civil War, Meridian was the temporary capital of Mississippi. It was destroyed by General Sherman in February 1864. In Meridian you will find a state mental hospital, as well as a huge naval jet training base to the north. Nearby Okatibbee Reservoir offers recreational activities.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Meridian. The city is near the Alabama line in the east of Mississippi, 140 km east from Jackson and 1300 km southwest from Washington D.C.
