The Moravske Slovacko region is in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic. It is one of the few places in the country where traditional folk culture survives. The people in Moravske Slovacko are friendly and are mostly involved in the production of wine, which is the best in the country because of the region's mild climate.
Most wineries are quite small and sampling the product is an interesting experience, as a result of the distinctive small household wine cellars, known as vinne sklipky. In some places, such as the town of Petrov they are really 'cellars' and partially underground, while in other places, such as Vlcnov they are more like huts. In Prusanky the wine cellars virtually constitute a separate village.
The local wine is used during numerous celebrations, to wash away the traditional food that is consumed during the festivities. During the festivals people wear colorful dresses and there is a lot of singing and dancing going on. Usually customs and costumes vary from one village to another, but the houses are often painted in white and blue. The best places to witness the festivals are Blatnice, Straznice and Vlcnov.
