Mysore is a lovely city with a pleasant climate. The city is known throughout the region for its silk, sandalwood and incense industries. Mysore was the seat of the maharajas of Mysore, until Indian independence. The maharaja's state covered about a third of present-day Karnataka. The principal attraction in Mysore is the Maharaja's Indo-Saracenic Palace. It has a beautiful stained glass kaleidoscope, numerous mirrors and solid silver doors.
The other major attraction in Mysore is the Chamundeswari temple, on top of Chamundi Hill. You will have to climb 1000 steps to get there. At the base of the stairway stands a 5 m high Nandi (Siva's bull). It was carved out of solid rock.
Other interesting places to visit in Mysore include the city's thriving Devaraja Fruit & Vegetable Market. It is in the center of town and all sorts of tasty fruits are sold there that you've probably never seen before. During the 10-day long Dussehra Festival in the beginning of October an interesting parade of richly caparisoned elephants, liveried retainers, cavalry, brass bands and flower-bedecked images of Hindu deities processes through town.
Mysore has bus and train connections with Bangalore, as well as Mumbai, Goa, Chennai and Hyderabad. Hotels and restaurants are widely available in Mysore. The city is 1775 km south of Delhi.
