The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is a small area in the arid northwest of China. Its population consists mainly of nomadic people tending sheep and goats. During the winter temperatures usually drop to far below freezing, while the summers are very hot and dry.
The region's capital is Yinchuan, which is not far from the Yellow River and a good place to stay if you want to visit the mountainous region of Helan Shan.
Ningxia Hui is one of the last regions in China where you can see leather rafts being used to cross rivers and streams. Several sheep or cow skins are tied together and inflated. A wooden framework keeps them in place and provides suspension for people and bikes and so on. The skins hold the air long enough to reach the other shore.
