Odongk, or Udong, was Cambodia's capital from 1618 to 1866. There are two ridges in Odongk, which are usually very quiet, but on weekends it gets busy with locals who come there for a picnic. On the smaller ridge you will find two ruined buildings, some stupas and the remains of the Ta San Mosque. On the larger ridge are the ruins of a large vihara (sanctuary), as well as the remains of a Buddha statue that was destroyed by the Khmer Rouge in 1977. Around these ruins are several smaller viharas, stupas and Buddha statues that are still intact. A 16th-century treasure is supposed to be hidden below the larger ridge, while at its base you will find a memorial to victims of Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge. The memorial contains the bones of all the people that were found buried in some 100 mass graves in the area.
There are several hotels and restaurants in town, but many people prefer to stay in Phnom Penh and visit Odongk on a day trip. Odongk is 35 km northwest of Phnom Penh.
