Palaha and Avaika Caves

The Avaika Cave is on Niue's western coast, about 7.5 km (4.5 miles) north from Alofi. The cave is well signposted and consists of a large coastal cavern that shelters a beautiful rock-pool. According to local legend, the Avaika Cave was the landing point of Niue's first settlers.

Nearby is the Palaha Cave, which is filled with stalagmites and stalactites.

In the vicinity of the two caves is the beach of Hio. It can only be reached by a wooden stairway down the cliff-side. Offshore is a chasm that is perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling. It is fringed with coral and boasts a colorful underwater life.
