Pocatello sits in a mountainous region on the Portneuf River, not far from its junction with the Snake River. The city has been an important railroad center since 1882. It is also a major shipping and processing point for a livestock and farm area. Pocatello has an important mining industry, as large phosphate deposits are nearby. There are many plants, where a large variety of goods is manufactured. There are excellent skiing and water sport facilities (especially around the American Falls Reservoir) in the area and as a result, tourism has become significant.
Pocatello is the seat of Idaho State University and the headquarters for Caribou National Forest. Fort Hall Reservation with its irrigation project is to the northwest, while the site of Fort Hall, which dates from 1834, is on the nearby Snake River.
There are many hotels and restaurants in town. Pocatello is in Idaho, 3010 km northwest of Washington D.C.
