Point Barrow

Point Barrow

Point Barrow is the northernmost point of Alaska. It sits on the Arctic Ocean, at 71°23? N latitude and 156°30?W longitude. The spot was first visited by British explorer Frederick W. Beechey in 1826. He named it for the British geographer Sir John Barrow. Point Barrow has since been the object of many expeditions and it has figured prominently in arctic aviation. It can be reached by ship only two or three months a year. The rest of the time, there's too much ice for ships to break through. The village of Barrow is not far southwest from Point Barrow. Farther south is a monument to Will Rogers and Wiley Post, who lost their lives there in an airplane crash in 1935.

Point Barrow is 1780 km northwest from Juneau and 5410 km northwest from Washington D.C.
