The equatorial river city of Pontianak has a distinctive Chinese-Indonesian atmosphere. It is criss-crossed by a system of canals that can be used to get around. Many people live in houseboats on the canals and the vistas of the rivers and canals can be absolutely stunning, especially the sunsets are a reason alone to visit Pontianak. After dusk young men fly large paper kites from the city's wooden boardwalks.
One of the most interesting sights in Pontianak is the wooden Mesji Abdurrakham royal mosque. Not far, in Pinisi Harbor you can see many beautiful Javanese and Sulawesi-style schooners and at Pasir Panjang are several marvelous beaches. Pontianak is also a good place to start boat trips up the Kapuas River.
There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Pontianak. The city is on the western coast of Kalimantan, about 740 km northeast of Jakarta. Ferries connect Pontianak with the Indonesian capital.
