Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province. The island lies in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, in the east of the country, some 935 km northeast of Ottawa. There are several interesting towns on the island, including its capital Charlottetown.
In the inland town of O'Leary on the west of Prince Edward Island is the PEI Potato Museum, where you can learn everything about potatoes. The Prince Edward Island National Park is on the island's central northern coast. Writer Lucy Maud Montgomery was born there in the town of Clifton in 1874. She used the town of Cavendish as the setting for her Anne of Green Gables series, which put Canadian literature and Prince Edward Island on the map.
Before the formation of the Canadian confederation in 1867, Prince Edward Island was one of the so-called Maritime Provinces. These provinces were politically distinct from Canada proper.
