The Royal Natal National Park is close to the northern border of Lesotho. It compromises some of South Africa's most dramatic scenery. An 8 km long cliff called the Amphitheatre forms the southern border of the park. The nearby Tugela Falls are a spectacular series of waterfalls that drop 850 meters in five different stages. Behind the falls looms 3282 meter high Mont-aux-Sources.
Animals that roam the park include antelope, baboon, hydrax, jackal, mongoose and otter. There are several rock paintings in the park and on the northeastern side it borders the Rugged Glen Nature Reserve.
There are numerous hiking possibilities in the Royal Natal National Park. Most trails can be covered in one day, but the trek up Mont-aux-Sources takes longer. It is also possible to do horse riding in the park.
There are campsites at Mahai and Rugged Glen Nature Reserve. The main camp is at Tendele.
