Sichuan is one of China's larger provinces. About 10% of the country's population lives in Sichuan. The province has a rich history, of which numerous monuments and temples remind the visitor. It has an interesting culture and a tasteful cuisine. It has numerous natural resources and the results of China's economic reforms can be seen best in the provincial capital of Chengdu. The province's other large city, Chongqing has little to offer for travelers. Not far from Chongqing are several hot springs. The best national park in Sichuan is Jiuzhaigou, while the world's largest Buddha statue can be seen at the pilgrimage town of Leshan.
Most of western Sichuan consists of very remote and inaccessible Tibetan-like terrain, but if you persist and manage to get there, you will be rewarded with a magnificent scenery of snowcapped peaks, grasslands and glaciers. People in this part of the province are mostly Qiang, who herd yaks, sheep and goats on the high Kangba Plateau Grasslands.
