Sigulda

Sigulda lies in the Gauja Valley in central Latvia. The hills around town boast several medieval castles and caves. The old Sigulda Castle is in ruins, but the New Sigulda Castle, which was the residence of the Knights of the Sword, is in good shape. It was built in the 19th century and houses a sanatorium. Two of the most important caves in local folklore and ancient legends are the Gutmanis Cave and Viktors Cave.

Sigulda is the main entrance point to the Gauja National Park and during the winter months it serves as a winter sports center. There are several hotels and restaurants in town. Sigulda is 50 km (30 miles) northeast of Riga and several buses and trains connect the two cities every day.
