Singaraja was the center of Dutch power on Bali and nowadays it is one of the island's few places where visible reminders of the Dutch era remain. Singaraja had been the main point of arrival for visitors to Bali for many years, until the resorts around Kuta Bay were developed and tourists started arriving there. The area around Singaraja remains one of Bali's major educational and cultural centers though.
About 10 km east of Singaraja is the interesting town of Sawan. Other places that are worth a visit include the towns of Jagaraga and Yeh Sanih, where you can see temples that feature unusual sculptural details, such as depictions of a vintage car, an aerial dogfight and a gent on a bicycle.
There are various hotels and restaurants in Singaraja. The town is on Bali's northern coast and it has a nice beach. Singaraja is also northern Bali's main transportation center and it has 3 bus terminals from which all of Bali's major towns can be reached.
