The Skocjan Caves lie in the Slovenian Karst region. Millions of years ago the area was covered by a deep sea, which left a thick layer of limestone deposits, in which the caves where formed. In 1933 several caves where connected with an artificial tunnel and since then visitors can pass through the caves.
The Silent Cave is a dry branch of an underground canyon that stretches for half a kilometer (545 yards). The first part of the Silent Cave is known as Paradise. It is filled with stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones. The second part is called Calvary. It was once the riverbed and is less spectacular. At the end of Silent Cave is a cavern known as the Great Hall. It is 120 m (394 feet) wide and 30 m (98 feet) high and it is filled with dripstones, deposits and marvelously formed rock formations.
Some 250 plant varieties live in the caves, as well as 5 types of bats. The Skocjan Caves are 60 km southwest of Ljubljana, not far from the village of Matavun. You can get to the caves by bus and train via Divaca.
