Spratly Islands



The Spratly archipelago is a disputed area. The islands are claimed in its entirety by China, Taiwan and Vietnam, while portions are claimed by Malaysia and the Philippines. The oil-rich Spratly Islands are also known as Diaoyutai Islands (or Senkaku) by the Japanese, Xisha by he Chinese and the Pescadores (or Penghu) by the Philippines.

The Spratly Islands consist of 100 or so islets, coral reefs and sea mounts that are scattered over an area of nearly 410,000 kmĀ² of the central South China Sea
