Suva has been the capital of Fiji since 1882 and it is the country's major port. It lies on the country's largest island, Viti Levu. About 50% of Fiji's population lives in the region around the capital, which is one of the largest cities in the South Pacific.
The Roman Catholic Cathedral is one of Suva's most prominent landmarks. It was built in 1902. Apart from the cathedral, there are numerous mosques, temples, churches and cultural centers in Suva, reflecting the city's multicultural composition. Other interesting sights include the Fiji Museum, the University of the South Pacific and many colonial-era buildings.
The area around the waterfront is quite interesting as well. Exotic fruits and vegetables, kava, fish and seafood, Indian sweets and savories, as well as a large variety of spices are available from the Suva Municipal Market.
There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Suva. Food can also be purchased from food stalls and from the market.
