A Mon kingdom ruled the region around Thaton, long before the rise of Pagan. Trade with places as far as Cambodia was established and Thaton was a beautiful place. Nowadays little remains of the ancient city. All there is left are the remains of the city walls, as well as some interesting pagodas.
The center of Thaton is cut in half by a highway that runs right through it. There are many trees and colonial mansions, as well as thatched-roof dwellings. There are many rice fields around the town, which are irrigated by a network of canals.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Thaton. THe city lies on the main road and rail connection between Bago (Pego) and Mawlamyine (Moulmein), some 135 km east of Yangon (Rangoon). Nearby is the interesting town of Taikkala.
