Tombigbee River

The Tombigbee River is about 640 km (400 miles) long. It rises in northeastern Mississippi and flow in southeastern direction into western Alabama. After that, the river flows southward to join the Alabama River and form the Mobile River. At Mobile, this river flows into Mobile Bay.

The Tombigbee is an important artery for manufactured goods. Dams and locks have been built in the river to improve its navigation. In 1972 construction was begun on a canal to connect the Tombigbee and Tennessee rivers. The 407 km (253 miles) long waterway was completed in the 1980's and is an important link in the navigable system from the Tennessee Valley to the Gulf Coast.
