The Torres Strait contains numerous islands, which lie scattered between the north of Australia's Cape York and the south coast of Papua New Guinea (PNG). All the islands are politically part of Australia, even those that are only a few kilometers from PNG. The total population on the 17 inhabited islands is around 10,000 and most of the people are Melanesians. They are racially related to the peoples of PNG. The main island in the region is Thursday Island.
