The Troodos Massif is a little visited mountainous area in the southwest of Cyprus. The mountains are excellent for hiking and during the winter months, skiing is possible. There are numerous ancient monasteries, of which the 12th century Kykko Monastery is the most popular one, although the monastery of Asinou is probably the most beautiful one. It can be reached from the town of Nikitári.
Interesting towns in the Troodos Massif include Pedhoulas in the west and the town of Pláres in the south. Pláres was originally a colonial hill station and it has become the main tourist resort in Troodos, so there is a lot of accommodation. The Soléa district occupies the northern part of Troodos. There are numerous small villages and monasteries scattered all over that region.
The Troodos Massif includes Cyprus's highest peak, 1952 m high Mount Olympus. The area is about 50 km southwest of Nicosia.
