Abomey is the old capital of the Dahomey kingdom. Most people come to Abomey to visit its Royal Palace of the Fon. The huge palace was founded in 1645 and used to cover about 40 hectares. After the French defeated the last ruler, Glele, he ordered the whole place to be torched in 1892.

The remainder is still amazing and consists of a collection of traditional houses. There is a museum inside that has a good collection on voodoo artifacts, skulls and artifacts brought from Portugal on slave ships. The museum also has an exhibition showing the interiors of traditional Benin houses. You are not allowed to take any pictures inside, but pictures are sold at a reasonable price.

The palace was added to UNESCO's list of world heritage sites in 1985.

The main market in Abomey is on Tuesdays and around the city there are many Fetish Temples scattered all over the area, each one dedicated to a different spirit.

Accommodation and restaurants are widely available.

As with most places in Benin, the best way to get to Abomey is by taxi. Fares are cheap. If you come from Cotonou, the trip will take about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
