Abuja has been Nigeria's capital since 1991, when it replaced Lagos. The process of moving departments and ministries from Lagos to Abuja has been very slow, as the government frequently runs out of money and still not all ministeries haven made the move yet. There is not much of interest in Abuja, unless you're a city architect. Most of the buildings in town are modern.

The original inhabitants of the area where Abuja was built, the Gwari people, have largely been resettled to other areas. Abuja is dominated by the 400 m (1,300 ft) high monolith named Aso Rock. Most of the city was built to the south of the rock, including the Presidential Complex, the National Assembly and the Supreme Court. Further north is another monolith called Zuma Rock. It is 792 m (2,598 ft) tall.

Some noteworthy constructions in Abuja include the Millennium Tower, the Central Bank of Nigeria headquarters, the Nigerian Presidential Complex, the Ship House, the Nigerian National Mosque and the Nigerian National Christian Centre. The National Stadium has been the venue of various international sports events. Aso Rock and Zuma Rock are also intersting sites.

Millennium Park is the city's largest park. Another nice park is Lifecamp Gwarimpa not far from the residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. In City Park you'll find a 4D cinema, Astro-turf, a lawn tennis court, a paintball arena and a variety of restaurants. The National Children's Park includes a zoo.

Accommodation in Abuja consists mainly of top-end hotels. The city has bus and air connections with Lagos and other major cities in the area.

Abuja is 520 km northeast of Lagos, at the geographical center of Nigeria, between latitude 8.25 and 9.20 North of the Equator and Longitude 6.45 and 7.39 East of the Greenwich Meridian.
