The Aburi Botanical Gardens, near the town of Aburi, 32 km north of Accra, are home to various exotic plant species from all over the world. The British laid out the gardens in 1890 and they are beautifully maintained. The area is very quiet and a welcome break from all the noise of the capital. The only tree the British didn't cut down when they planted the gardens is in front of the parks office building.

Some of the tree species in the Aburi Botanical Gardens include silk cotton (ceiba pentandra), mahogany, cedar and silver oak, amongst others.

There is an old colonial-style hotel and restaurant, but it is also possible to stay in the nearby town of Aburi. You can get to the gardens by minibus (tro-tro) from Accra.
