The small oasis town of Aouzou lies in the extreme north of Chad. It was the namesake of the Aouzou Strip. The town was captured from Libya by Chadian in 1987, but Libya recaptured it not long after. In 1994 the conflict was settled and control was transferred to Chad.

The population of Aouzou and the nearby valley of the Enneri Yebige is about 1,000 people. Aouzou is about 850 km north of N'Djamena.
