Appenzell is a small, old-fashioned town. There are some nice traditional old houses with beautifully painted façades. Women in Appenzell were only granted the right to vote in 1991, after the supreme court ruled that their exclusion was unconstitutional.

Every year on the last Sunday of April, the town's streets are filled with flags and flowers. On that day the locals gather to vote on cantonal issues by a show of hands in the open-air parliament. Most people wear traditional dresses for the occasion and you'll see many men with swords and daggers to proof their citizenship.

There is very little accommodation in Appenzell. The town is in the northeast of Switzerland, some 80 km northeast of Bern.
