Artaxata (Ἀρτάξατα) was the capital of the Kingdom of Armenia from its founding in 176 BC to 120 AD. The city itself was founded during the reign of King Artaxias I (Artashes).

Artaxata was destroyed and rebuilt several times between the 1st and the 5th centuries AD, but in the end it was abandoned completely and nowadays, only ruins remain. you can still see the remains of the city walls and several buildings.

The monastery of Khor Virap is also located there.

The ruins of Artaxata sit on the left bank of the Araks River, some 45 km southeast of Yerevan.
