Auki is the main town on Malaita Island. It is a beautiful, picturesque place and the capital of Malaita Province. In the 1920's Auki used to have a perimeter fence to keep the locals out and protect the (white) Europeans, which lived within the perimeter. Nowadays it is a mixed town, without any racial tensions.
There are several hotels and good restaurants in town. Auki is a good place to shop and you can make trips to nearby lagoons, featuring artificial islands. There you can see the ancient practice of shark calling.
About 16 km from Auki are the interesting Laulasi and Busu Islands.
Auki sits at the northern end of Langa Langa Lagoon, 115 km northeast of Honiara.
