Baltimore (Maryland)
Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and forms a large agglommoration with nearby Washington D.C. The city was established as a port for tobacco trade with Europe in 1729. Baltimore served as the capital of the United States for a few months when the congress fled there from Philadelphia in December 1776, before that city was taken by British troops.
The first railroad in the United States, the B&O Railroad, was built between Baltimore and Ohio in 1830 and the city has been a major transportation hub ever since. As a result countless manufacturing companies have been established there.
Baltimore boasts countless historical sites and monuments and as a result, the city has become a popular tourist destination. Most of the tourism focuses on the area around the Inner Harbor, but there are numerous interesting historical buildings, spread throughout the city.
Points of interest
- 100 Light Street was formerly called Transamerica Tower and that's what most people still refer to it. It it the tallest building in Baltimore, maesuring 161 m (528 ft) in height. It has 40 storeys and it is located at 100 Light Street and it was completed in 1973.
- The historic Alex. Brown & Sons Building was constructed in 1901. It served as the corporate headquarters for the banking firm Alex. Brown & Sons until 1997. The building is located at 135 East Baltimore Street, at South Calvert Street.
- The Bank of America Building was completed in 1929. It has 34 floors and at 155.15 m (509 ft), it is the second-tallest building in baltimore. It is also known as 10 Light Street and formerly as the Baltimore Trust Company Building. it is located at the intersection of East Baltimore and Light streets.
- The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is usually referred to as the Baltimore Basilica. The Catholic cathedral was constructed between 1806 and 1863. It is located at 409 Cathedral Street.
- The Battle Monument was erected in 1815 to commemorate the victims of the War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom. It is located in Battle Monument Square, in the middle of the street and between the two Baltimore City Circuit Courthouses on the other side of North Calvert Street. The monument is 11.9 m (39 ft) tall.
- Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church is a Gothic Revival-style church that was inaugurated in 1870. It was named after Baltimore financier George Brown. The church was beautifully restored between 2001 and 2003. It is located at the intersection of Park and Lafayette avenues in the Bolton Hill neighborhood.
- Baltimore City Hall houses the offices of the Mayor and Baltimore's City Council. It was built in the Second Empire style from 1867 to 1875. It is located at 100 North Holliday Street, on a city block adjacent to City Hall Plaza and west of the War Memorial Plaza.
- The Baltimore City Heritage Walk is a 5 km (3.2 mi) long walking-route that links 20 historic sites and museums in downtown Baltimore.
- The Baltimore World Trade Center (WTC) is a 30-storey skyscraper that was constructed between 1973 and 1977. At the 27th floor is an enclosed observation deck known as Top of the World. It probides panoramic views over Baltimore. The WTC is located at Pier 2, 401 East Pratt Street.
- The B'nai Israel Synagogue was built in Moorish revival style in 1876. The building is part of the Jewish Museum of Maryland and located at 27-35 Lloyd Street.
- Camden Station is a beautiful railway-station. Construction of the ornate building started in 1856 and the station opened in 1867. It is located at 301 West Camden Street, at the intersection of South Howard and West Camden streets.
- Columbus Center is home of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute.
- The neighborhood of Federal Hill is immediately south of the city's CBD. The district includes many historic buildings and it is bounded by the Inner Harbor to its south.
- Fell's Point is a historic waterfront neighborhood in the southeast of Baltimore. The district was founded in 1763 along the north shore of the Baltimore Harbor. Fell's Point is about 2.5 km (1.5 mi) east of central Baltimore. There are numerous cafés, pubs and restaurants in the area.
- Fort McHenry is a historical pentagonal bastion fort on the coast at the Locust Point neighborhood. It successfully defended the city's harbor during the War of 1812 against the British. The fort was built in 1798.
- Harborplace is a popular shopping and dining complex, located at the Inner Harbor, at 201 East Pratt Street and 301 Light Street. It opened in 1980.
- The Holocaust Memorial.
- The Horseshoe Casino.
- The House at 9 North Front Street is a historic home located at 9 North Front Street in the Jonestown Historic District. It was built in the 1790s and it is one of the few remaining 18th-century townhouses in Baltimore. It was the former home of Second Mayor Thorowgood Smith and it once housed the offices of the Women's Civic League.
- The Inner Harbor is a historic seaport that is located at the mouth of Jones Falls. Several historic ships are permanently moored there and serve as museum-vessels.
- Lexington Market was originally founded as Western Precincts Market in 1782. It is one of the oldest marketplaces in the United States. In 2022, a new markt building opened that is home to 50 merchants and kiosks.
- The Lloyd Street Synagogue is a former Jewish synagogue that is now part of the Jewish Museum of Maryland. It was built in the Greek Revival-style in 1845, making it the oldest synagogue in Maryland. It is located at 11 Lloyd Street.
- Lockwood Place.
- McKeldin Square was designated as Baltimore's zone to organize protests. It is located near the Inner Harbor at the intersection of Pratt and Light streets.
- McKim's School, or McKim's Free School, is housed in a historic Greek-style building. Its façade features 6 freestone Doric columns. The building was erected in 1833 and served as a school until 1945. It is located at 1120 East Baltimore Street, at Asquith Street
- The district of Mount Vernon is immediately north of downtown Baltimore. The neighborhood was named after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia. The Washington Monument is located there.
- The National Aquarium is colloquially known as the Baltimore Aquarium. The aquarium is housed in a striking building with a glass pyramid that was constructed in 1981. The aquarium is home to more than 750 aquatic species. it is located at 501 East Pratt Street on Pier 3 in the Inner Harbor.
- The Old Town Friends' Meetinghouse, or Aisquith Street Meeting is a historic Quaker meeting house that was built in 1781. It is located at 1201 East Fayette Street, at Asquith Street.
- The Phoenix Shot Tower, or Old Baltimore Shot Tower, is a red brick shot tower that was used for the manufacture of lead balls. The molten lead was dropped from a height into a water basin, thus forming small pallets that were used for projectiles in shotguns, ballast, radiation shielding and other applications for which small lead balls are useful. The tower is 71.4 m (234.25 ft) tall and it was erected in 1828. It was the tallest structure in the United States at that time.
- Power Plant Live! is an entertainment complex in the Inner Harbor neighborhood. It opened in 2001 and was enlarged after that. The complex houses numerous bars, cafés and restaurants, as well as other businesses. It got its name from the nearby Pratt Street Power Plant building. The complex is located along Market Place.
- The Pratt Street Power Plant used to be a power plant that provided electricity to Baltimore. The plant was built in 1900 and retired in 1973. Attempts were made to repurpose the building for venues, restaurants, clubs and art galleries, but most of them were not successful.
- The President Street Station opened in 1850. it was an important rail link during the American Civil War. It remained in used as a railway station until the 1940s, after which is was used as a warehouse and fell into disrepair. In 1997, the building was restored and nowadays it houses the Baltimore Civil War Museum. It is located at 601 President Street, at Fleet Street
- The Roman Catholic St. Vincent de Paul Church was built in Neoclassical style in 1841. It is located at 120 N. Front Street.
- War Memorial Plaza is a public square with a small park in the center of Baltimore. It is located between City Hall and the War Memorial Building.
- The Washington Monument is located in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. It was built between 1815 and 1829 and it was the first major monument in the United States that was erected to honor President George Washington.
- The Zion Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church that was built between 1807 and 1808. It was later enlarged. The church was formerly known as the German Lutheran Reformed Church and sits at 400 East Lexington Street, at North Gay Street.
- The SS John W. Brown is an operational Liberty Ship that was originally launched in 1942. Cruises on the ship are arranged and it is usually berthed at Pier 13 in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
Museums
- The American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) is dedicated to the preservation and display of outsider art, which is also known as 'intuitive art', 'raw art', or 'art brut'. The museum is located at 800 Key Highway, in the Federal Hill neighborhood.
- The Baltimore Civil War Museum is housed in the former President Street Station at 601 President Street, at Fleet Street.
- The Baltimore Maritime Museum was merged with the USS Constellation Museum to form the Historic Ships in Baltimore museum.
- The Baltimore Public Works Museum was housed in the operating old Eastern Avenue Sewage Pumping Station that was built in 1912. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1982. The museum had exhibits showing the workings of public utilities such as street lighting, road maintenance and trash removal. Outside stood a sculpture named Streetscape, which depicted a network of phone lines, street lights, storm drains and pipes for water, gas and sewage disposal. The museum closed in 2010 due to budget constraints.
- The Baltimore Museum of Industry is dedicated to manufacturing and industry from the early 20th century. The exhibits include historic machinery and there are several hands-on sections. The museum was founded in 1977 and it is located on the site of an old cannery on the North-west branch of the Patapsco River at 1415 Key Highway.
- The Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum is located in the row house, where baseball legend Babe Ruth was born. The museum exhibits artefacts from Ruth's life. It opened in 1974 and it is located at 216 Emory Street.
- The B&O Railroad Museum.
- The Carroll Mansion, orCarroll-Caton House, is a historic building from 1811 that was converted into a museum in 1967. The museum was closed between 1997 and 2002. It is located at 800 E. Lombard Street, off Front Street.
- Geppi's Entertainment Museum was a museum that exhibited pop culture in America from the 17th to the 21st centuries. It was located at the historic Camden Station at Camden Yards. The museum was closed in 2018.
- The Jewish Museum of Maryland has exhibitions on the history of American Jews in Maryland and Baltimore in particular. The museum opened in 1960 and it was renovated between 2023 and 2025. The museum sits in between and includes the 2 synagugues of Lloyd Street Synagogue and B'nai Israel Synagogue. The former is a Greek revival design from 1845, while the latter was built in Moorish revival style in 1876. The museum is located at 15 Lloyd Street.
- The Maryland Science Center (MSC) opened in 1976. It includes exhibits, a planetarium and an observatory. It is located at the Inner Harbor.
- In 1814, a museum was opened that displayed works of artist Rembrandt Peale. The collection was moved to the Baltimore Museum and Gallery of Fine Arts in 1829 The original building was subsequently used as City Hall from 1830 to 1875 and as a school between 1878 and 1887. In 1931, the building was renovated and opened as the Municipal Museum of Baltimore. From 1978 to 1981, another renovation took place and the Peale collection was moved back there. It then reopened as The Peale. The building was again renovated from 2017 to 2022. The Peale is located at 225 North Holliday Street.
- The Port Discovery Children's Museum is located in the historic Fish Market building in the Inner Harbor district. It features interactive and educational exhibitions for children up to 10 years of age.
- The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture was founded in 2005 to exhibit the contributions of African Americans from Maryland. Its collection includes more than 11,000 documents and artefacts. It is loacted at 830 East Pratt Street, at President Street boulevard.
- Ripley's Believe It or Not! was a museum that exhibits bizarre events and weird items, many of which are so unusual that people won't believe they are true. The museum opened in 2012 and closed in 2020.
- The Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry was established in 1996 to preserve and exhibit the history of dentistry throughout the world. It is located on the campus of the University of Maryland.
- The Sports Legends Museum was housed in the Camden Railway Station and had exhibits related to Maryland's sports history. The museum opened in 2005 and closed in 2015.
- The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House was formerly known as the Flag House & Star-Spangled Banner Museum. The building dates from 1793 and it was the home of Mary Young Pickersgill, who sewed the the huge out-sized garrison flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814, when the British atttacked it. The museum exhibits furniture and antiques from the period, as well as artefacts that belonged to Pickersgill family. It is also known as the War of 1812 Museum and it is located at 844 East Pratt Street, at Albemarle Street.
- The USS Constellation Museum was merged with the Baltimore Maritime Museum to form the Historic Ships in Baltimore museum.

Historic Ships in Baltimore
Historic Ships in Baltimore was created, when the USS Constellation Museum and the Baltimore Maritime Museum were merged. The maritime museum is located in the Inner Harbor at Pier 3, 4 and 5, 500 block, East Pratt Street. It includes 4 historic ships and the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse.
- The Seven Foot Knoll Light was built in 1855 and placed atop Seven Foor Knoll at the mouth of the Patapsco River in the Chesapeake Bay. It was replaced by a modern lighthouse in 1988. The wrough iron construction was restored and in 1997 it was moved to its current location at the Inner Harbor to serve as a museum exhibit.
- United States Lightship Chesapeake (LS-116/WAL-538/WLV-538) was launched in 1930 and decommissioned in 1971. It is now a museum ship and located in the Inner Harbor.
- The USS Constellation was the last sail-only warship designed and built by the United States Navy. The ship was built from 1853 and 1855. Nowadays it is permanently berched as a museum ship and located at Pier 1 (Constellation Dock), East Pratt Street, at South Calvert Street.
- The USS Torsk is a Tench-class submarine that was commissioned in 1944 and decommissioned in 1968. It has been in use as a museum ship since 1972 and it is located at Pier 3.
- WPG/WAGC/WHEC-37 is a United States Coast Guard high endurance cutter that was commissioned in 1936 as the USCGC Roger B. Taney. It was the last ship in the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack that remained floating. The ship was decommissioned in 1986 and has served as a museum vessel in Baltimore's Inner Harbor ever since.
Baltimore has some 2,000 ha (5,000 acres) of parkland, where you can relax and escape the bustle of the city. Some of the most popular ones are Patterson Park, Federal Hill Park and Druid Hill Park.
Baltimore boasts a wide variety of accommodation, cafés, bars, clubs and restaurants. The city has excellent road-, rail- and air connections with the rest of the United States. Baltimore is 70 km northeast from Washington D.C.
