Bartica is a small mining town and a good place to stay if you want to explore the surrounding gold and diamond fields or make the two-day truck ride and trek to the Kaieteur Falls, 170 km to the southwest. The Marshall Falls are also in the vicinity.

Bartica lies on the west bank of the Essequibo River, at the confluence with the Cuyuni and Mazaruni rivers. The Essequibo River provides good swimming possibilities. There is a colorful market in Bartica.

The Denham Suspension Bridge links Bartica with Mahdia. The bridge is also known as the Garraway Stream Bridge. Not far north of town are the ruins of the Dutch fort Kyk-Over-Al.

Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. Every year during Easter, the the Bartica Regatta is held in town. The event features speed boat racing, cricket, boxing, soccer, talent shows, a street parade and a Miss Bartica Regatta Pageant. An annual summer Regatta is organized in August. Bartica is 70 km southwest of Georgetown.
