Despite being the administrative capital of Guadeloupe, Basse-Terra is only the department's second-largest city.

Some places of interest include Fort Delgrès, which provides excellent views over the city; the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadaleoupe; the Monument to the dead of Basse-Terre and Basse-Terre Town Hall.

Basse-Terre is a good place to stay if you want to visit the chutes du Carbet (Carbet waterfalls).
