Bitola is Makedonia's second largest city. It has an interesting bazaar area. Also worth a visit are the Ruins of Heraclea. Philip II of Macedonia founded Heraclea in the 4th century BC. Around 200 BC the Romans conquered it, to make it an important stage on their Via Egnatia. Between the 4th and 6th centuries AD Heraclea was an Episcopal seat. The most interesting ruins include the Roman baths, portico and theatre.

Bitola sits on a 600 m (2165 feet) high plateau in the mountains of southern Makedonia. There are only a few hotels and restaurants in Bitola. The city is 110 km south of Skopje and only about 15 km from the Greek border.
