Buyeo-eup was the capital of the Baekje Kingdom (Paekche Kingdom) from 538 to 660 AD, but little remains of the ancient Baekje city. During that time the city was known as Sabi Fortress. Not far from town you will find several burial mounds and also some foundation stones from the army's arsenal and a five-storey pagoda remain.
The Buyeo-eup National Museum houses an excellent collection of Baekje artifacts and its exhibitions include weapons, jars, Buddha images, roof tiles, funeral urns and bronze bells from the 6th to the 14th centuries. There is very little explanation of the items though, so it's a good idea to read some Korean history before visiting the museum.
The old royal palace of the Baekje kings is known as Pusosan. It is open to visitors and quite interesting. According to legend, the 3,000 court ladies threw themselves off a cliff to a certain death, rather than being captured by the invading Shilla armies that sacked the town.
Buyeo-eup is a nice little town that includes several hotels and restaurants. It has bus connection with most of South Korea's larger cities. Buyeo-eup is 140 km south of Seoul.
